At Children without Borders, we understand that nutrition is a cornerstone of healthy childhood development. No child should struggle to learn, grow, or play because they lack access to nutritious food. That’s why our Food Security Initiatives are designed to address hunger and strengthen community resilience in the neighborhoods and districts where we work across Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
We partner with families, local leaders, schools, and community organizations to deliver sustainable food support programs that ensure children never go to bed hungry and can focus on learning and thriving.
We implement food programs tailored to the specific needs of each region, including:
Weekly or monthly community food distributions
Collaborative food pantry support
Nutritious staples such as grains, beans, rice, fruits, and vegetables
These programs help alleviate immediate hunger while promoting long-term household food stability.
Good nutrition fuels learning. Within the communities where we serve, we support:
School breakfast and lunch programs
Healthy snacks for students in need
Partnerships with local schools to expand meal access
Providing meals at school ensures children can focus, participate, and succeed academically.
We believe in empowering communities to grow their own food. Our agricultural initiatives include:
Establishing community gardens
Training families in sustainable farming and gardening techniques
Seed and tool distribution to support local food production
These efforts improve food access and strengthen community self-reliance.
Healthy habits last a lifetime. We provide workshops and support that help families:
Understand balanced nutrition
Prepare affordable, nutritious meals
Maximize the benefits of local food production
Education increases the impact of food support far beyond distribution events.
Food insecurity not only affects physical health — it impacts emotional well-being, school attendance, and long-term development. Children who lack reliable access to healthy meals are more likely to experience:
Reduced academic performance
Health issues such as anemia or stunted growth
Increased family stress and instability
By ensuring children are well-nourished and supported, we help build stronger families and more resilient communities throughout Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
Our food security programs are active in:
Communities across Nicaragua — including rural barrios and comarcas
Districts in Costa Rica — with programs adapted to local needs
Each initiative is coordinated with local partners to respect cultural traditions, maximize impact, and build long-lasting community ownership.
Your support helps us deliver:
More meals to hungry children
Community gardens and agricultural training
Sustainable food systems for families

Volunteering involves two processes. If you are a foreign national from a country where we operate, please contact us by email at info@childrenwb.org for more information. If you reside in the country where we work directly, the process is simpler, as these volunteers are familiar with the local situation and our volunteer procedures.
